PHOTOGRAPHS OF THE HOPI

Photographs have not been allowed on the Hopi reservation for many years-for good reason. The ceremonies and their way of life are sacred to the Hopi, not displays put on for tourists and other outsiders. Before restrictions on photographs were imposed, however, a number of anthropologists and other researchers in the early 20th Century were allowed to photograph on the Mesas, and these photographs are in the public domain.

The following are a few from the U.S. History Images site, an amazing resource for anyone interested in American history. All photographs: Hatzigeorgiou, Karen J. U.S. History Images, 2009.
